Psalm 45. I just actually want you to hold your place in Psalm 45 and we’re gonna just spend a little bit of time this evening in Hebrews chapter 1 as well. So if you’ll hold your place here and go to Hebrews chapter 1 and kind of hold both places because I want to read both places together. Okay Hebrews chapter 1 I guess we can go ahead and go to Hebrews chapter 1 first and get a kind of a background. This is a very interesting psalm and by interesting what I mean is that it is different than the other Psalms, the other 44 Psalms, most of the other 44 Psalms that we’ve studied because the content is just totally different. It’s prophetic from start to finish. The psalm is prophetic and so there are parts of the psalm that are not exactly easy to understand if I can put it that way because of the prophetic nature of it but you’ll see why I say it’s prophetic in just a minute.
In Hebrews chapter 1 if you would look at verse number, let’s just start in verse number 1 to pick up the context. The Bible says, God who at sundry times and in diverse manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son whom he hath appointed heir of all things by whom also he made the worlds who being the brightness of his glory and the express image of his person and upholding all things by the word of his power when he had by himself purged our sins sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high. Notice that these are these are characteristics that alone belong to deity, right? The scriptural deity that is he who is God alone that is applied to the Lord Jesus Christ. I can’t understand how somebody could read Hebrews chapter 1 honestly and come away thinking that Jesus is anything else than very God. It actually says the brightness of his glory and the express image of his person. You know what that say? Jesus is God. I mean it’s it could not you know you can weasel out of it you know linguistically if you want but it is clearly stated and if that was in doubt at all he goes on to say he upholds all things by the word of his power. So those are characteristics of deity the fact that he is the creator. Verse 4 being made so much better than the angels as he had by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they for under which of the angels said he at any time thou art my son this day have have I begotten thee and again I will be to him a father and he shall be to me to me a son and again when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world he saith let all the angels of God worship him so to which of the angels did God ever say that to? None of them none of them. Verse 7 and of the angels he saith who maketh his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire. Okay so that’s that’s the first part now we pivot to the second but unto the son now let’s stop here a second who is the speaker we see so we see who he’s talking to but who is the speaker if you would look at the context again but unto the son he Who is the he? Who is the he? Huh? God is verse 1 and you follow God spoke and then you go down to verse 5 you follow the context verse 5 unto which of the angels said he that’s God and again when he God bringeth and of the angels he saith that’s God of verse 1 then you get to verse 8 we’re still talking about the same he God now listen carefully read very carefully what God says to the son but unto the son he God saith thy throne O God is forever and ever a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom thus loved righteousness and hated iniquity therefore God even thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows and this is still God talking to the Sun this is nuts this is God talking to the Sun he goes on and thou Lord in the beginning has laid the foundation of the earth and the heavens are the work of that works of thine hands they shall perish but thou son he’s still talking to the Sun remainest and they shall all wax old as the garment and as a vesture shall thou fold them up and they shall be changed but thou son art the same and thy years shall not fail again attributing the characteristics of deity to the Sun Jesus but in verse 8 the thing I want you to point out to I want you to point out is when this where this verse says unto the Sun he saith thy throne O God so this is God telling calling the Sun God okay now I want you to put that in your mind as we go back to Psalm 45 Psalm 45 and look at verse starting in verse 1 Psalm 45 verse number 1 it says to the chief musician upon Shoshanim for the sons of Korah my skill a song of this is this is a love song but it’s not a love song in the sense of the love of a man and his wife but this is a love song within I hope I don’t lose you here within the Godhead this cut this is kind of stuff that they don’t mess up your theology all right so in this Psalm you’ll see verse number look take a peek at verse 6 ahead of time look at verse 6 ahead thy throne O God is forever and ever a scepter of thy kingdom is a right scepter so what we read in Hebrews 1 was quoted out of Psalm 45 everybody follow that but what do we know from Hebrews that is not initially readily apparent in Psalm 45 is that the speaker is God and he’s the person to whom he is speaking is the Son that’s what Hebrews tells us Hebrews 1 8 says that the recipient of these words in verse 6 is the Son so what you do is because you know that from the New Testament you take that truth and you if I can say this word extrapolate it and start at the beginning of the psalm knowing that knowing that so we’re gonna start at the beginning of the psalm knowing that the person to whom the psalmist is speaking is the Son of God Jesus Christ now let’s start with that in mind let’s move forward verse 1 my heart is indicting a good matter you know what indict means it means to compose like you’re writing something I speak of the things which I have made touching the king my tongue is the pin of a ready writer thou art fairer than the children of men now let’s stop this that’s where we begin thou you that’s second persons second person singular so the writer of the psalm right is the author of the psalm is writing to this person this person is identified in Hebrews as the Son of God in verse 6 thou son of God Jesus Christ art fairer than the children of men grace is poured into thy lips therefore God hath blessed thee forever I’m gonna keep reading I’m gonna come back to verse 2 in just a minute because this is really gonna it’s really gonna get crazy here in just a minute gird thy sword Jesus upon thy thigh O most mighty with thy glory and thy and in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness and thy right hand Jesus shall teach thee terrible things thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies whereby the people fall under thee thy throne O God is forever and ever the scepter of thy kingdom is a right scepter thou still talking to the Sun Jesus Christ love is righteousness and hate is wickedness therefore God thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows mark that verse or note that verse as well because we’re gonna look at that verse with verse 2 in just a minute all thy garments still talking about Jesus smell of myrrh and aloes and cast you out of the ivory palaces whereby they have made thee glad that’s where the song comes from out of the ivory palaces into the world of woe and you know what is thoroughly scriptural right Kings daughters were among thy honorable women upon thy right hand did did stand the Queen in gold of offer okay now let’s go back to verse 2 for fun all right look at verse 2 thou art fairer than the children of men grace is poured into thy lips therefore God hath blessed thee forever now follow me in verse 2 and also read verse verse while we’re here read verse 7 because the same character is true in both thou lovest righteousness and hate is wickedness wherefore God thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows in both verse 2 and verse number 7 you have three people who are the three you have the thou who is the thou Jesus Jesus Christ how do we know that we’re gonna have a Bible college class right now this is the contextual principle okay how do we know that thou refers to Jesus because of Hebrews okay we also know I mean even without Hebrews though when you look at this psalm it’s obviously it’s this is well established that this is referring to the Messiah the King okay even before Jesus came that was understood okay so you have the thou look at verse 2 again then you have grace is poured into thy lips wherefore God hath blessed these that’s the second person so we have the thou in the verse that’s Jesus and then we have God in verse 2 you also see it in verse 7 in verse 7 you have God where therefore God thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows okay so you have God in verse 2 and you have God in verse 7 okay so now you have two people you have Jesus who is the thou the thee the thine right I’m not losing anybody am I okay then you have God mentioned those all of all those of you that love all the these and thou this is your chance then you have God mentioned in the verse where’s the third person huh no I mean yes but not as main characters yes the speaker the speaker now here’s the thing we know who is the speaker in Hebrews 1 that says to the Sun thy throne o God who is the speaker God in chapter 1 verse 1 God who at sundry times that goes through and you get to verse 8 and it says thy throne o God to the Sun he saith by throne o God so you have three people in verse 2 and in verse 7 you have three you have the Sun who is the thou you have God who is doing the in verse number 2 God is doing the blessing and in verse 7 God is doing the anointing and then you have the speaker who himself is also God what you have is the Trinity talking amongst themselves that’s what you have in these verses you have you have God the Father speaking to God the Sun and you have God the Father while speaking to God the Son referring to God the Spirit while at the same time in verse number 6 God the Father speaks to God the Son and calls him God because he is very God thy throne o God is forever and ever the scepter of thy kingdom is a right scepter thou lovest righteousness and hatest wickedness therefore God to the Sun now thy God hath anointed thee with oil of gladness above thy fellows the anointing the picture of the oil what is the oil a picture of of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is anointing the Lord Jesus Christ the Bible says the Father givest the Son of man the Spirit not giveth not the Son of man the Spirit by measure so you have in in the psalm 1,000 years before Jesus was born you have this picture of this not the picture the direct reference of the Trinity but notice they’re talking amongst themselves about one another so it this tells us something about the nature of the Trinity it’s not just to make this perfectly clear we do not believe in three gods that’s called what do they call that I forgot what the word is I mean that would be polytheism but there’s a special word the reverse to that is is however the idea that God there’s only one God he appears in different forms that’s called modalism and that’s not what we have here because if God just appears in different forms there’s no way that the three persons of the Godhead could communicate but of course we know that there aren’t there are not three gods because if there were three gods that would violate a host of scriptures that described only one God but in fact the scriptures teach that there are three persons of the Godhead there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the Holy Ghost and these three are one and because they are distinct persons although one God this means that as we see the Lord Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane and other times to his father they between themselves can communicate with one another and they have been doing that from eternity past it’s just Psalm 45 gives us a glimpse now in Psalm 45 about what matter are they communicating in Psalm 45 they’re communicating about the Lord Jesus Christ as the King as the King now notice notice these words in verse 2 well let’s start in verse 3 Gird thy sword upon thy thigh O most mighty with thy glory and thy majesty words of a king right words of a king so this is the father speaking to the son with the Holy Spirit present there also talking about the place and the rule of the Lord Jesus Christ as a king he mentions his sword now in scripture especially in New Testament I know in the Gospels you have mentions of Jesus Christ as the King you know the the King comes lowly and meek sitting upon the fall of an ass you remember reading about that he came as the King into Jerusalem but we knew he didn’t come to reign at that point that is to reign over Jerusalem he reigns over us he reigns he is a king but as far as reigning over this world visibly that hasn’t that hasn’t happened yet but it will happen it will happen and this Psalm indicates that notice he mentions his sword and what we see in the New Testament as far as the kingship and the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ is there is judgment involved in fact when the Lord Jesus comes back to this world physically he will come to judge that’s one thing about the the coming of Christ I think sometimes we get a little bit off I covered this in Sunday School long time ago when you talk about the coming of Christ we focus our eyes and our thoughts a lot on the the rapture of the church because that’s it that’s to us that’s a that’s a that’s a major part of the coming of Christ but really that’s in the big scheme of things that’s a minor thing compared to Christ coming because his coming is an absolute blood bath his coming is is to wipe the earth of the wicked he comes with fire in his eyes he comes with a sword like you see here girded upon his thigh ready to judge with glory and majesty when he appears in power and great glory right verse number four notice the ride so whenever Jesus finally appears as the king when he appears and reveals himself as the king he will reveal himself in judgment and power and great glory and he will reveal himself writing like we read in Revelation chapter 19 he says in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness notice those words truth and meekness and righteousness Jesus said I am the way the truth and the light but notice meekness because in association with Jesus Jesus rightful place as king he sat upon the cult of a donkey in meekness that was a symbol of meekness and here meekness in association with his power as king is also mentioned and then he also mentions righteousness which deals with his judgment obviously and he says goes on to say and thy right hand shall teach the terrible things thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies whereby the people fall under thee and this just another reminder as we continue forward this is going to get interesting in just a minute even more than it already is notice the mention of Christ’s enemies when he comes to when Jesus comes to reign when he comes to this world this world not the liberals and not the conservatives are going to be glad about his coming nobody’s going to be happy about that nobody’s going to be happy about that the only people are going to be happy about that are those that are waiting for his coming and in expectation and there will they will be there and Jesus will come and he will deal with his enemies Matthew 24 Matthew 25 both describe that revelation chapter 19 describes the coming of the Lord where he takes takes out his enemies let me just give you a little bit of eschatological information one of these days maybe we can go through the book of Revelation I’ve been thinking about that because that would be a that’d be a very interesting study albeit a lot of gaps probably in our understanding because there’s a lot in there that is probably hard to get but one thing you do see in the Revelation is when when the Lord Jesus Christ comes he is coming to seize power from the kingdoms of this world it’s what Revelation says whether it’s the United States or Germany or Great Britain or India or China or Russia or Argentina whatever whatever the kingdoms of this world are Jesus comes to take them as his own and anybody and everybody every human being on earth that is an unbelieving and unconverted person will be wiped off of the earth and that’s how his kingdom will begin it will begin with a whole bunch of people that that have believed and expected his return and have believed and they they have trusted in him but they go into the kingdom just like you and I they go into the kingdom and the difference is that the environment is all different because all of the the earthly governments and there will be earthly governments in that time all of the earthly governments will be under the the power and control of the Lord Jesus Christ directly and that’s why the Bible says we will rule and reign with him in those various places of authority in his kingdom but the kingdom starts with no one believers it starts with every all the believers that were there when he when he returned and he will set up he will remove his enemies that’s what verse 5 tells look at verse 6 thy throne oh God another indication of his kingship is forever and ever a scepter of thy kingdom is a right scepter you know do you know scripturally and prophetically what will be the key characteristic of the kingdom of Christ righteousness righteousness that scepter well that’s not something we’re familiar with right we just that’s not it’s it’s basically a stick that’s basically it’s a it’s a special stick an expensive special stick it’s a stick only the king is allowed to have it symbolizes his power because he is the only person allowed to touch it and so it symbolizes his power but that the symbol of his rule is righteousness that stands for everything you know one thing I was thinking about before while we were singing you know I was thinking of dear old Donald Trump I was thinking of Donald Trump you know one day Donald Trump as powerful of a man as he is and those that went before him of course will bow to the reign of Christ he will he will bow just like just as lowly as you and and I will bow no different verse 7 thou lovest righteousness and hatest wickedness therefore God thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows again the Holy Spirit the God in verse 7 anointing the Lord Jesus as spoken of by the Father in the same verse 7 you want to know what Jesus smells like he smells like myrrh and aloes and cashew hey it’s biblical right I actually set the myrrh out that I have you guys know when I around Christmas time I got got out some myrrh somebody I bought some myrrh online and I brought some out let everybody sniff it who didn’t get a chance to sniff the myrrh all right well I’ll bring it out after church and you can you can smell it and so you know what Jesus smells like okay I’m not being cute that’s what the verse says all right verse number 9 King’s daughters were among thy honorable women upon thy right hand did stand the Queen in gold of Ophir stop so we have a king now we have a queen now the queen is normally the what of the King the wife and notice the Queen is mentioned so in the this is remember this psalm is prophetic it’s looking toward that time when the Lord Jesus is reigning you know because to God that’s a done deal right he who dwells outside of time and is not limited by time like we are he sees that as it’s already happened and is happening now indeed and he’s describing the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ where he reigns in righteousness and here beside the King upon his right hand is the Queen his wife his wife look if you would at Revelation chapter 21 we’ll come back to Psalm 45 in just a minute Revelation 21 verse number 9 we could go to Ephesians chapter 5 where Christ and the church are referred to as a picture of husband and wife and that analogy is used of crash in the church but here prophetically here’s what it says verse number 9 and there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues and talked with me saying come hither I will show thee the bride the Lamb’s wife now it’s funny because in Psalm 45 we know that that when we read the epistles we read how that Christ we’re the bride of Christ and the the husband and wife relationship pictures that we understand that that relationship has not yet been consummated as husband and wife but by the time you get to Revelation that’s done we’re with him in other words it pictures the marriage where we were no longer just espoused as we are now but we’re married right the marriage supper of the Lamb has happened okay we’re married that’s why in Psalm 45 it’s referred to as the Queen it’s a done deal it’s been sealed okay so the angel says he will show John the bride the Lamb’s wife and he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain and showed me that great city the holy Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God so that is that that’s he says I want to show you the Lamb’s wife and he looks and he sees this city falling down I can’t fully understand that I think the best explanation for that is to say that that is the dwelling place of the bride of Christ okay because in other scriptures we know the bride of Christ references the church okay but the idea is it comes down like like like she’s being carried right like she’s being carried down to be displayed now keep reading verse 11 having the glory of God and her light was as unto a jasp stone most precious even like unto a jasper stone clear as crystal notice a jasper stone so when you saw it the city is clear like a diamond like a jazz in other words it’s a it’s a clear city it’s as a jasper stone keep reading verse number verse number 18 now this is a description of the city in New Jerusalem notice what it says in verse number 18 and the building of the wall of it was of jasper that’s clear right verse 11 and the city was pure gold like unto what clear glass it’s clear you see it the wall is clear the city is clear keep reading verse number 21 and the 12 gates were 12 pearls every several gate was a one pearl and the street of the city was pure gold as it were transparent glass once again not yellow clear can I explain that no I’ve heard people that pseudoscience people try to explain how they if you align up the moncules and whatever with gold I have my doubts but I believe what the Bible says so when John sees this city which I think is reference to the the lambs wife to her dwelling place come down what does he see he sees basically a kind of like a sparkling chandelier because it’s clear now there is color in there because it’s mentioned other stones but it’s basically the street is clear the wall is clear the city is clear verse 21 makes it perfectly rather verse number verse 18 to end of verse 18 the wall of the city was of Jasper and the city was pure gold the city that is the whole thing was pure gold like unto clear glass so when you have we have this picture of course we know the Lord Jesus Christ dwells among his people and we know that there’s no night there because the lamb is the light remember from your reading of Revelation well what does that mean that means that you can see the light of the lamb through the city because it’s it’s it’s a chandelier that’s what it looks like it’s a chance it’s a big chandelier the lights on the inside and all that lights being reflected out and all the beautiful colors but primarily white and the city is made of verse I’m gonna I’m gonna read one more time because I don’t want to lose I don’t want it you miss this verse 18 and the building of the wall of it was of Jasper and the city was pure what gold like unto clear glass clear glass go back to Psalm 45 to finish up verse 9 King’s daughters were among thy honorable women upon thy right hand did stand the Queen in what gold of offer that that purest best gold this mentioned in Genesis so you have this picture of Jesus as the King and by his right side you have his Queen dressed in pure gold right their marriage has been sealed and she is beside him reigning with him she’s Queen she’s reigning right that’s a Queen not just a wife consort like they do in England right but a Queen notice verse number 10 God the Father the speaker now speaks to the Queen and here’s what he says to the Queen Harkin Oh daughter isn’t that beautiful the children of God called daughter by God the Father as she stands beside her her husband right and consider an inclined I near forget that listen what God says to her forget also thine own people and thy father’s house what a beautiful thing you know the Church of God has made up of people of every tongue and tribe and people and nation and the Lord says forget about all those identities none of that matters we’re Americans right we’re glad to be Americans but when we stand beside the Lord Jesus Christ none of that’s gonna matter no that’s gonna matter verse 11 so shall the King greatly desire thy beauty for he gave it to us we had none of our own he put it he put us put it there for he is thy Lord the King and worship thou him worship thou him now I don’t have time to go into all of the rest of these things in here because honestly I don’t understand all of it I don’t understand all of it there’s other ladies who are not the Queen who are mentioned and I’m sure there’s prophetic significance but I don’t fully understand it but you know what I thought was really neat as we look at this picture of the Lord Jesus Christ as King prophetically in the Psalms is the church as his Queen as his bride is mentioned beside him you know what so prophetically we are also as the people of God as the Church of God we are also prophetically found in this psalm beside the Lord Jesus Christ let’s pray together
